The coolest thing you can do in Orlando.
– review of the annual event at the Gaylord Palms Resort & Convention Center (Kissimmee).
Living in South Florida our winters rarely dip below sixty degrees and you miss the joy and exhilaration of being cold and playing in the snow. At a chilling nine degrees, ICE! at Gaylord Palms in Orlando has filled the void of a winterless South Florida.
Now, in it’s tenth year of infancy and with more features, ICE! Is better than ever. This year’s theme was A Charlie Brown Christmas by Charles Schulz. The entire Peanuts crew never looked better sculpted in ice with their larger than life silhouettes. They were showcased in all the best scenes from A Charlie Brown Christmas. Scenes like their holiday play rehearsal, Snoopy’s decorated doghouse and Charlie Brown choosing the perfect Christmas tree. Seeing the whole gang in a circle staring up at the tree was amazing. The colors were so iconic with Charlie Brown that it really made everything come to life. You were also mesmerized knowing that every cut and scrap that formed these characters came from two million pounds of ice! You could see the actual ice being carved live in the Frostbite Factory.
In the middle of the ICE! walk through was four high and fast ice slides. With your parka provided by the attraction it kept you warm enough and also provided a slickness to fly down those ice slides. Closing out the nine degree walk through portion of ICE! was the very thing that Christmas is all about. It showcased a huge nativity scene all with crystal clear glass; the angel especially was stunning.
After spending some time looking at all the seasonal gifts, seeing the Gingerbread workshop, Santa and all the various photo opps we went to the next room. This room was dominated like a snow covered mountain by a huge snow tubing course. Whether you went down forwards, backwards or just spinning around you had a lot of fun. Also in this room and new this year was the Santa’s Snow Throw. There guests threw snowballs at various targets that when hit made different lights and sounds go off.
ICE! at the Gaylord Palms also had a remarkable free show in its atrium. It was Cirque Dreams: Unwrapped and it had all the daring feats and the side slitting comedy you’d find in a Cirque show.
