More Than A Zoo, It’s A Wildlife Park Experience!
– review of the attraction (Williams, AZ).
The moment I approached the huge wooden drive-thru sign of Bearizona (reminiscent of the entrance to Jurassic Park), I knew this was going to be much more than your ordinary zoo…and man was I right!
We then caught the High Country Raptors twenty minute free flight show. This was not some building with metal bleachers and stairs after stairs, but it was outdoors nestled in between trees with natural wooden benches. This was called ‘Free Flight’ for good reason as owls, hawks and falcons zoomed past as their tail feathers skimmed your head! This was a little scary. but incredibly exciting. When the owls flew by like George a five year old rescued Great Horned Owl, you couldn’t hear him but you could feel him skirting over your head. The Harris’s Hawk Bonnie flew so close that I expected to see ripped open scalps everywhere, but fortunately for us, she kept her landing gear up until she neared the perch. My personal favorite was an American Kestrel, which is the smallest falcon. It flaps its wings so fast that it can hover like a helicopter. This was a great little show that had a lot of laughs as well. Bearizona also has other ongoing shows like Dave and his African Crested Porcupine Turbo who is as cute as he is intelligent (Turbo that is).
The park also has a huge Fort Bearizona Walking Area with River Otter Bend, a Mine Shaft Experience with nocturnal animals, Keeper Chats to get you up close and personal with a plethora of information and the Fort Bearizona Barnyard where you can interact with all the farm animals. The standout though had to be their gift shop and restaurant. The gift shop was huge with every themed toy, trinket and gear you could think of and also showcased a 3D train set of the town of Williams and the Grand Canyon.
