BACARDÍ x Major Lazer Present Welcome to the Sound of Rum ‘Spirit Up’
– review of the event at Virginia Key Beach Park (Miami).
Bacardi and Major Lazer kicked off Memorial Day weekend with a huge beachside bash to celebrate “The Sound of Rum.” Teaming up for a brand new flavor of rum, a combination of light and dark rum flavors, the oceanfront concert was the first public unveiling of the flavor. Set up around the stage were four pop-up food stands, serving Caribbean, Jamaican and Haitian cuisine that tempted the taste buds with delicious flavors, as well as copious amounts of various Bacardi flavors being served at the bars. Each of the four restaurants had their own DJ, which was keeping the flavor of each respective restaurant by playing authentic island music.
After a couple of hours of allowing the guests to mingle, try the new rum and enjoy the delicious food fare, an opening DJ took the stage to warm up the crowd. After playing a few remixes of popular hip-hop songs, getting the crowd going and letting everyone know that the real party has begun, Major Lazer took to the stage to the wild applause of the crowd. Set against the darkened backdrop of Virginia Key Beach, the stage was flanked by a huge LED screen in front of which producers Diplo and Jillionaire were entrenched surrounded by their DJ equipment. Walshy Fire took over MC duties for the concert, jumping around like a crazed madman while the group played a set-list full of bangers, including remixes of popular rap songs Mask Off and Kanye’s Father Stretch My Hands, as well as original songs such as Throw Dem Up. The entire time, Diplo and Walshy would periodically throw random merch into the crowd, including t-shirts and Major Lazer branded whistles. About an hour into the show, Camila Cabello joined the group on stage for the live premiere of a brand-new song, Know No Better from their upcoming new album.
Overall, I had a great time, got to try some delicious food and was able to witness the premiere of a brand-new song. Keep a lookout for the brand-new Bacardi Major Lazer rum, set to hit the US market next month, and check out the long awaited new Major Lazer album, Music is the Weapon, which is said to be getting released in the next couple of months.
