United States Bartenders’ Guild Names Andrew Lue Miami’s Most Imaginative Bartender Winner
Local Bartender Wins Regional Finale and will now head to Home of BOMBAY SAPPHIRE® gin in England to vie for North American title
Last night in Miami, the United States Bartenders’ Guild hosted the 11th Annual Most Imaginative Bartender Competition’s (MIB) regional Miami finale presented by BOMBAY SAPPHIRE® gin. Ten of the best bartenders from Miami stirred creativity to present their most imaginative works of art — in a glass — before an esteemed panel of judges. After an evening showcasing each bartender’s personal inspiration behind their drink, Andrew Lue was officially announced as Miami’s 2017 Most Imaginative Bartender, taking home the win for his ‘Uncharted Territory’ cocktail (recipe below). Andrew will now move on as one of the top 12 bartenders from across the United States and Canada who will be traveling to England – the home of BOMBAY SAPPHIRE – to compete in the North American Finals this August.
For the very first time, this year’s Grand Prize winner will be named “GQ Bartender in Residence” where he or she will collaborate on a series of cocktail videos and act as an in-brand cocktail and culture expert throughout the year for GQ Magazine.
“It’s such an honor to be recognized for my cocktail after competing against some of the best bartenders in the region,” says Andrew, “So many previous MIB winners have gone on to become such an inspiration in the bartending community, so it’s thrilling to be one step closer to being a part of that legacy. This competition always brings out an exceptional level of artistry, showcased through mixology, and I cannot wait to continue on this journey and learn from my peers. Representing Miami in England this summer is going to be an invaluable experience for my career.”
Since its inception, the USBG Most Imaginative Bartender Competition has worked with bartenders who have gone on to further their careers and be known as some of the top bartending talent across North America today. Since winning the 2016 North American title, Schuyler Hunton has been working on launching his very own bar program, set to open in the heart of Boston later this year. 2015 champion Justin Lavenue has also opened two of Austin’s hottest cocktail spots since his win. 2014 winner Ran Duan transformed his family-owned business – a traditional mom and pop Chinese restaurant just outside of Boston – into one of the most talked about cocktail bars in the nation in the wake of his victory.
“Each year, the Most Imaginative Bartender competition gives emerging bartenders an international stage to showcase their talents.” says Tom Swift, VP, Managing Director for BOMBAY SAPPHIRE gin. “Andrew’s ‘Uncharted Territory’ cocktail is a phenomenal example of the boundary-pushing creativity that is possible with cocktail making, and I look forward to seeing what he has in store at the North American Finals in England this August.”
