Big Gigantic

Written by Jacquelyn Leutner
Electronic iTunes chart-toppers storm through Tally.
-review of the show at the LIT night club (Tallahassee).
Big Gigantic only sounds like part of the phrase you would use to describe this tireless duo. Dominic Lalli and Jeremy Salken continuously play to sold-out crowds nationally promoting their newly released album, Nocturnal. The album is an exploration into the unique and dynamic sound these two guys from Boulder, CO are only beginning to perfect.  The album is so big right now it topped the electronic albums chart at #2 on iTunes, despite the fact that it’s available for free download on their website.

Big G’s commitment to their tour and their fans was evident when the initial venue in Tallahassee closed. Instead of canceling, they quickly moved it to the LIT nightclub only a couple days before the show, but they kept up the positive energy and ensured an anticipated arrival into town.

Even though Tallahassee was only a pit stop on their exciting tour, Big Gigantic put everything they had into their resonant performance that highlighted all of their melodic hits. From the spacey adventures in Sky High off A Place Behind the Moon, to the explosive tempo changes in Hopscotch off Nocturnal, and topping it off with their popular Flux Pavilion remix I Can’t Stop and Aloe Blaac remix I Need a Dollar. Their bass was tuned to make you melt and Dominic’s Sax serenaded a power ballad that would gradually build into fanatical expressions of hyper blissfulness. Every song you really hoped they would play, they did, and with a level of professionalism I was not expecting. I naively imagined they might bring a light display to the caliber of their New Year’s Eve show; a slight disappointment. I would be interested to hear if they had it in more A-list cities or if the change in venue prevented the stellar light show that they’re capable of.

The only downside to this local show is as with many sold-out shows; forget elbow room. If you had any hopes of even seeing the stage, you were either a burley security guard or you had fearlessly staked out your ground long ago and had no problem getting incredibly personal with your neighbors. But, if you’re like me and you need some room to dance, the hovering lights of the stage pulsating off the silhouette of the crowd was all you could see. The corridor barred off for the packed-in crowd was so long and narrow and the stage was set so low, only a privileged few could actually see the act. But, if you love Big G, you should check out this tour before it sells out.
