One of South Florida’s best attraction parks joined up with some of the best chefs for a family event not to be missed.
– review of the event at Jungle Island (Miami).
Once again SOBEWFF descended on Miami making it temporarily the Culinary Capital of the World. Countless thousands traveled from everywhere to South Florida to experience all the food and television stars from the Food Network, the Cooking Channel and the Travel Channel.
Now, most of the SOBEWFF events are a little pricey and decadent, but Badia Spices Fun and Fit as a Family has a price and an availability for everyone to experience. For just twenty dollars you get admission to Jungle Island filled with food samplings, star television chefs, interactive cooking demos and children’s activities that are fun and healthy.
This Saturday there was a hum in the air, not to mention a scrumptious aroma. All throughout Jungle Island was children smiling and playing while doing different activities. They had a really good DJ pumping out the tunes while kids did some cardio, dancing and even doing some kickboxing routines. Also surrounded by food and learning tents was a huge obstacle course that kids blazed through as the crowd cheered them on.
As the kids wound down they painted pictures on easels and took pictures with characters like Ronald McDonald and a Goya mascot. The really brave children took pics with parrots, snakes and even baby alligators.
With all this playing, people built up an appetite, but as this is a SOBEWFF event, you knew any hunger would be properly satisfied. There was food everywhere and it gave people not only a taste of healthier options, but always the knowledge of recipes, where it came from and how it works.
The Barilla tent was a real standout among the food tents. They served you a plate of different pastas with marinated tomatoes and little delicious ball of mozzarella perfection. Kids also learned about the different shapes and colors of pasta and even filled their own bags with it.
Other highlights included: tasty frozen swirled yogurt, some pulled pork, a pick your own fruit bowl and Frozen Kefir Push-Ups from Lifeway.
The perfect combination of food, knowledge and fun was the Badia Passports to Flavor, which had families running around Jungle Island getting their books stamped and learning about spices.
Fun and Fit as a Family really shined in their Interactive Food Lab. This was an indoor area for kids only. They put on caps and aprons and made their own food while being directed by celebrity chefs. The beautiful and talented Adrianne Calvo was really good at working hands on with each kid and hopeful future chefs. However, she wasn’t alone as other chefs in the Food Lab were Dewey LoSasso, little Josh Reisner and fan-favorite Latin star James Tahhan.
Still, what Fun and Fit as a Family is most renowned for is the Goya Food Kidz Kitchen. This was a huge area that still managed to get packed as celebrity chefs gave cooking demos geared towards children and loved by adults as well.
First up was Star of Restaurants Impossible, Chef Robert Irvine. Normally he’d intimate you by his huge muscular physique, but he would bend down to talk to the kids eye to eye. It was really cool how intrigued he got the kids when talking about an abundance of healthy options.
Next, former Miami Dolphins defensive back Eddie Jackson took the stage to a roaring crowd. Most people in attendance didn’t know Eddie from his NFL days, but rather from winning the Next Food Network Star. He currently hosts his own show BBQ Blitz and took those flavors to Jungle Island.
Closing out Fun and Fit as a Family was Travel Channel star Andrew Zimmern. He electrified the crowd with his humor and bazaar food eating stories while also fielding questions from the audience as well. He was so kind and approachable with all the kids that it’s easy to see why he’s so loved. During his book signing in the park, Andrew would put the kids up-close, talking to them and taking pictures. Truly a standup guy.
After seven hours of food and fun it was time to leave and digest. Fun and Fit as a Family has it all and as a bonus, it’s in the perfect location at Jungle Island. Hope to see you guys their next year.
