An Intimate Conversation with Andy Cohen.
– review of the show at Seminole Casino Coconut Creek.
To many people Andy Cohen is best known as the referee/mediator of the various Bravo Television “Housewives” reunion shows. What you don’t know is his other accomplishments are as colorful as the man himself. Cohen who hails from St Louis began his tenure at Bravo in 2004 as Vice President, Original Programming developing an amazing array of ‘unscripted reality based’ series and specials. These included hits such as Project Runway, Top Chef, Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, Flipping Out, Tabatha’s Salon Takeover, The Millionaire Matchmaker, the Million Dollar Listing franchise, Kathy Griffin My Life On The D-List, Being Bobby Brown, Shahs of Sunset, Top Design, The Rachel Zoe Project, Bethenny Ever After, and The Real Housewives franchise. All massive hits with devoted watchers and followers including celebrities such as Jerry O’Connell, Chrissy Teigen, Jennifer Lawrence and Jonah Hill. For the average Joe this may be enough, but not for Cohen. His mark on the television genre keeps growing. As a serious journalist in 2005, Cohen was awarded the Peabody Award for Executive Producer of the TRIO documentary The N Word. For ten years he worked as a producer at CBS News (1990-2000), working on 48 Hours and CBS This Morning.
His Emmy Award-winning talk show Watch What Happens Live on Bravo is one of the top rated and most watched shows on cable. This series is the only live show in late night television and boasts some of the most beloved and influential guests in pop culture. His guests have included Cher, Oprah Winfrey, Lady Gaga, Meryl Streep, Carol Burnett, Jennifer Lopez, Jennifer Lawrence, Mariah Carey, Amy Schumer, Rod Stewart and Cyndi Lauper. Many of his interviews make the news and have great insight in the world of Entertainment and its elite. He is a New York Times best-selling author (The Andy Cohen Diaries: A Deep Look at a Shallow Year and Most Talkative: Stories from the Frontlines of Pop Culture. His most recent book, Superficial: More Adventures from the Andy Cohen Diaries, was published in November 2016). He has his own channel Radio Andy on Sirius Satellite Radio. This summer he will host a reboot of the game show Love Connection on FOX.
This evening at the Seminole Casino Coconut Creek it was Cohen’s turn to be on the other side of the questions and in the spotlight with an ‘Intimate Conversation with Andy Cohen’. Roxanne Vargas from local South Florida station NBC 6 was the moderator for this special event. The set for the hour long session was not your typical question-and-answer format. Of course that was the grip of the show but an added spice of color commentary was added to make the evening a notch above the rest. The stage was designed to look like Andy’s clubhouse from his Watch What Happens live show, perhaps to make Cohen feel more at home. Behind our guest and Roxanne was a screen that projected pictures which aided in moving the evening along as well as fueling the segments questions. Cohen’s as always seemed at ease and right at home as he answered questions, told stories, and looked back on his life and career. It wasn’t just a night of remembrances. There was a look into the future of his career and personal goals as well as the state of the television medium as a whole. This included his insight and comments on the power of social media outlets and their influence in our world today, and being an openly gay man in society.
The questions from the audience seemed a bit scripted considering they were read off cards. Nevertheless, it was a fun outing as some hardcore Housewives fans shouted out from time to time in an attempt to get the dish from Cohen. Always the diplomatic gentlemen he did his best when asked about the recent comings-and-goings of certain Bravolebrities. The show was followed by a book signing and photo opportunity. Of course, I was right up there being the fan I am. Cohen is just a cool guy, plain and simple. He was accommodating, funny, and appreciative of the 1200 sold-out audience in attendance. You may not get all your questions answered by Andy Cohen but it was certainly a fun way to spend a Friday night.
