A Holiday Wonderland for All Ages
It may be hard to believe a winter wonderland exists in Central Florida but it’s true. Every year in early November the Magic Kingdom Theme Park in Walt Disney World turns into a holiday extravaganza for the entire family. The main attraction on these nights is Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party. Mickey and the gang celebrate the season with lights, excitement and good cheer geared to awake the child in us all. I can barely remember my first trip to Disney World in 1972, but what I do recall is the feeling I had walking on Main Street U.S.A. for the first time and spying Cinderella’s Castle in the background. It was unlike anything I’d ever seen. It’s the same awe and wonder I feel today. The Disney Company has created pure magic – the holidays accentuate their enchanting spell.
On selected evenings Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party fills the air with music, laughter, dancing, holiday lights, and shimmering snowflakes on Main Street. There are a number of yuletide gatherings throughout the Magic Kingdom all leading up to the Christmas parade and amazing fireworks display. Season’s Greetings may be the most popular in the Kingdom. You can receive autographs and take pictures with more than 15 Disney Characters as they spread holiday cheer throughout the park. Dressed in their holiday best there may also be special sightings of Santa, Jack Skellington as Sandy Claws, and Scrooge McDuck.
As when I was a child Cinderella’s Castle is the place to be for the merriest show in the land. Mickey’s Most Merriest Celebration is a wonderful holiday treat as Mickey invites his pals to join him in celebrating the holiday fun. Minnie, Donald, Goofy, Pluto and Daisy all arrive wearing their Christmas best. Peter Pan flies in from Neverland, Woody and Jessie from Toy Story gallop in for this holiday ho ho hoedown. Alice and the White Rabbit from Wonderland, Pinocchio, Snow White and Dopey, Jiminy Cricket and many more surprise guests all drop in ready to sing holiday carols old and new. Cinderella’s Castle is aglow with changing holiday lights and illuminations.
For all the Frozen fans there is A Frozen Holiday Wish on the Castle Forecourt Stage. This show stars sisters Anna and Elsa featuring special appearances by Kristoff and my favorite snowman Olaf.
Mickey’s Once Upon A Christmas Parade is the event everyone waits for. Hours before the start of the parade people stake out their watching place hoping to get the best view. Festive gingerbread men, elves, tin soldiers, and others dance down Main Street U.S.A. as the parade winds through the park’s different lands. Characters in the parade include some of the most famous Disney residents: Mickey & Minnie, Donald Duck, Goofy, Anna and Elsa, Olaf, Pooh and Tigger, The Seven Dwarfs, Mrs. Claus, and of course Santa, wishing all a “Merry Christmas!” from his sleigh. Note to Santa – you still owe me a Harley from when I was ten.
Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party would not be complete without the holiday treats and treat stations throughout the park. Hot coco and cookies have now expanded to appeal to everyone’s taste pallet. I can feel the pounds coming on already just writing this. But you know, it’s the holidays, we all need to treat ourselves once in a while.
- Tortuga Tavern: Snowman Soft Pretzel and Sno-Cone
- Liberty Square Ticket Office: Ginger Molasses Cookie and Eggnog
- The Friar’s Nook: Silky Smooth DOVE Chocolate and Sparkling Apple Cider (candies provided by DOVE Chocolate and J&J Snack Foods)
- Pete’s Silly Sideshow: Peppermint Crunch Cookie and Nestle Nesquik
- Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Café: Snickerdoodle Cookie and Hot Chocolate
- Auntie Gravity’s Galactic Goodies: Santa Claus Cookie and Sno-Cone
Of course there is the fireworks display. I have never seen fireworks like this anywhere. They amaze and garner “Oo’s and ah’s” from all the guests of the party. It is truly a spectacular end to a jolly holiday evening.
Disney World is known for making dreams come true and the holidays are no different. Magic is in the air as spirits fly high with the crispness of winter air. Even in Florida snowflakes are in abundance on Main Street U.S.A. Don’t miss out on the festive holiday fun.
